LIFE AFTER RACING

At the end of their training our horses go to some of best homes we could hope for. It is wonderful to see the pleasure they bring their owners and the credit they bring to their breed.

Cooper - 2004 15'2hh Gelding
Shenanigan Shannon retired Aug 2009
55 races for $59656
After owning Arabs for many years Trina was amazed at Cooper's intelligence and athleticism. We prepared Cooper to Stage 2 and Trina is looking forward to completing his training on the trail herself with the idea of eventually doing some ARC as well.
Bella - 2005 15hh Mare
unraced
Bella has been the sweest mare since she arrived almost 2 years ago and has completed her training with the same lovely attitude. Fynn is going to be able to ride her in the arena straight away and Anna is going to enjoy working to get them both going at Pony Club and out on the trails.
Red - 2006 15'1hh Gelding
Just So Innocent NZ retired Aug 2009
4 races for $290
Such a smart, willing young horse - Red was a delight to work with and Andrea is going to have a wonderful time with him. Only just turning 4, Red has a lot of filling out to do and is going to be a very handsome man when he finishes growing.
Lloyd - 16'2hh 2002 Gelding
Keilor Gambler - unraced
Given how much injury time out Lloyd had, he picked up an incredible amount during his training and certainly has the brains to make the most of any training Caroline does with him. Strong willed and very alert - he has a lot of potential as a dressage mount.
Jenna - 15'1hh 2004 Mare
Talk About Jenna retired May 2009
1 race for $0
Jenna's owner was determined to give this mare the best Life After Racing she could get and I totally understand why. Not an angel but always a delight to handle and rewarding to work with, she and Michelle have already formed a great relationship.
Nipper - 15'1hh 2001 Gelding
Split Decision NZ retired June 2009
66 starts for $19235
He was always going to be a great laid back Trail Horse and offers Michelle the flip side of the coin from Jenna plus a great safe horse for her husband and family to ride out on. He was in fine condition when he came to us and I am looking forward to seeing him filled out in about 12 months time.
Plod - 15'2hh 1999 Gelding
unraced
Plod and Julianne had some great rides out at Bredbo but have gone back to basics to build their relationship in town. He's a lovely horse and Julianne is committed to making things work and they will both benefit from the Natural Horsemanship experience.
Wally - 15'3hh 2001 Gelding
Polo Walton retired April 2007
49 races for $20493
Our resident Union rep (always making sure he is not doing anymore work than he absolutely has to!) has settled well into life with Phil and Julianne. With Phil not able to ride due to a knee op, Julianne will be riding him and doing some Natural Horsemanship clinics with him.
Sully - 17'3hh 2002 Gelding
unraced
Although Sully tried his hardest throughout his training he showed a definate lack of muscle tone in his hindquarter. He is lucky to have such a devoted owner in Steve who is prepared to give him the time and work he needs to build up this strenghth and improve his gaits.
Harry - 2003 14'3hh Gelding
Orphan Harry - retired May 2009
43 starts for $11952
Harry and Kenzie are going to have many happy years of riding together. Great to see such a lovely young rider with such a nice horse.

Zym - 2003 15'3hh Bay Gelding
Zymurgy retired Aug 2008
11 starts for $950
Zym has gone to a great home with his paddock buddy Garry. Sisters Gabbi and Heidi have a perfect match of trail buddies here and I am sure they are going to have a lot of good times together.
Garry - 2000 16hh Bright Bay Gelding
Chasing Garry retired April 2008
44 races for $19965
Garry was a hard worker on the track and was the same during his training. His strong work ethic ment he did take longer to get "the trot" rather than the pace but in everything he did he tried his best. I am so pleased he has gone to an owner that really appreciates all his good points and am pleased to report that Gabbi and Garry are already cantering out on the trail together.
Cash - 1998 15'1hh Bay Gelding
Verandah retired Dec 2008
77 races for $324016
I always feel a bit like I am selling ice to the eskimos when I sell a horse into Victoria but the main thing is that they have a great life ahead of them. Cash is a confident, solid horse who I am sure will do his best for his new owner. Looking forward to the updates on this boy.
Irish - 1991 14'3hh Bay Mare
Irish Goer USA retired 1996
56 starts $23437US
A very sucessful race mare, Irish was imported to Austraila as a broodmare. She made the transition to saddle at 18 and with a wonderful nature. She is part of the Kalimbah Standie family and you can find out more about her under Kalimbah Horses.
Milly - 2004 15'3hh Black Mare
Millytom Trump retired Nov 2008
6 races for $893
Milly's trainer told me she was a special horse and she turned out to be just that. It is rare to find such a smart mare that is also so calm and willing - she was a dream to train and will no doubt thrive in her new home with Michelle doing dressage, riding club and some trails.
From Michelle 2/7/09
"We had our first ladies riding club meeting today and it must be about 10 degrees and force 10 winds. Lots of text messages back and forth and we decided we'd all brave it. I stood at the top gate and called Milly (I have mentioned the steepness of our paddocks?) just to see what she'd do and she saw me, whinnied and cantered up to the gate where she stuck her head in the headstall. She was an angel on the float and only a bit anxious at first in the arena with the new horses (not to mention the wind blowing the markers away as we rode in the arena) and people. She did really well - very calm and some exceptional trot in frame action down the straight bits and to the right - we are both a bit wobbly to the left - and did very well at canter to both sides for a starter. No worries at extended trot!"
Handel- 1997 15'2hh Bright Bay Gelding
Handel retired Dec 08
54 starts for $56,502
He was a very sucessful racehorse with winnings over 56K and has now made a very sucessful transition to a new life under saddle. A great life as a farm horse awaits him with Joe and his family.
Scotty - 2003 15hh Bay Gelding
Be My Hero - unraced
This little horse captured the hearts of everyone who met him - there where at least 3 wonderful homes waiting for him! Patty has herself a very special boy here and I am sure he is going to have a great future with her.
Sunny - 2001 15'2hh Gelding
Sunshine Gamble retired Aug 2007
37 races for $2820
Sunny by name and sunny by nature! This boy was always the first to greet you in the paddock and the last to leave the gate. He has found a wonderful home with Judy whose experience with Natural Horsemanship means this boy will have a true friend to share the trails with.
Buster - 1998 15'2hh Dark Bay Gelding
Faraway Buster retired July 2002
6 starts for $375
I thouroghly enjoyed every minute training this horse, he is totally people oriented and just wants to be your best mate. He and Tammy are going to have a lot of fun trailing together over the years!
Cleo - 1999 15'3hh Brown/Black Mare
Colaye - unraced broodmare
Oh no another keeper! Craig would like to breed her for a foal to eventually race - I just want to get her going under saddle and do some dressage on her. She is a part of the Kalimbah Horses family.
Rocky- 16'3hh 1998 Chestnut Gelding
Silent Hero - unraced
The horse I had to sell! Rocky was such a delight to ride - responsive and honest, he tried his hardest on every ride. In the end I was not riding my "difficult teenager" (Big Bad- who is very hard work at the moment) but riding Rocky instead. Even as I was riding him for Sharon - cantering 20m circles on the bit - I was having my doubts about selling him but I know he has gone to a great home and that Big Bad will only improve with work!
Bonaparte - 15hh 1996 Bay Gelding
Light Out 1996 retired Sept 03
57 starts for $38,231
Bones charmed Jackie and her family with his gentle, unflappable nature from their first visit. from Jackie 07/01/09 "Boney is doing really well, although he has been a bit cheeky on the catching front. Shaelyn absolutely loves him, and he is extremely tolerant with her as she drags him around the yard. She has been riding him, when I have time to get him in, and has been taking him around in a circle and trotting. I haven't got a photo of her on him, but I did take some video footage. He reminds me occasionally that he is a horse, and that he is alive, but overall he is as we thought, quiet and dependable."
Cash - 2001 15'1hh Bay Gelding
Cash Cameleon 2001 retired June 08
58 starts for $15810
Cash only spent a few weeks with us before heading off to his new home with Mel. Cash certainly has the looks and brains to make it in the show ring! 6 months later he was Reserve Champion Led Standardbred at the National Capital Horse Show.Congratulations Mel!
Flynn-2003 16'3hh Bay Gelding
Hamilton Adeiu retired March 2006
4 races for $100
Flynn proved himself to be as sweet and easy under saddle as he was to work with on the ground. I am really looking forward to hearing how he grows and developes with Elisa.
From Elisa 09/08/08 - "He has really impressed me as a very sensible horse. He has been fantastic with everything that I have done with him, from floating to standing for vaccinations and being rugged and wormed.I have never seen an animal show such incredible sense and trust.
If it turns out that he can't jump, then I am confident that he will have an exciting future in the dressage ring simply because of his temperament. Thank you for selling us such a lovely horse.
LEO- 2004 15'2 Bay Gelding
Another very special boy - Leo is acutally my Nell's last foal so it is eash to see where he gets his good looks from! Smart, quick to learn but with a very laid bck style he is a perfect match for Anicca who is looking to a future of trailriding and some dressage with him. From Anicca -"We went for our first ride this morning! I have to say, he was just a total doll! I rode around by myself for a bit, and he was very forward, but totally relaxed, and then met up with a friend and we headed out for about half an hour. When he is in front he is a speed walker, but when he is behind he is very happy to doodle along at snails pace. We went and explored all the things that horses find scary – the barn, tarpaulins, sulkies propped against sheds, floats with flappy things – and he didn’t bat an eyelid. "
Joey - 2001 16'2hh Bay gelding
Kenny Speed retired 2006
3 races for $300
From such an uncertain backgroud he never put a foot wrong with us and tried his best with everything he did. It made me so pleased then to see that Joey is going to someone who thinks he is as special as we do! They both looked so comfortable with each other by the end of our ride - it is great to see when a horse and rider just "click".
Stormy- 2003 14'3hh Filly
Stormy Shannon - unraced
Although it is always a huge decision to buy a horse I don't really think Jo could go wrong with Stormy and I know she is now very pleased to call this lovely girl her own. I am sure I will catch up with Jo on the trails around Cooma and am looking forward to seeing this lovely young mare (and her owner) develop.
Sammy - Jan 2004 15hh Black Filly
Silently Positive retired Feb 2008
5 races for $0
Sammy was a sweetheart from the start and did very well in her saddle training. She has gone to Moss Vale to be a pleasure harness horse and for the occasional ride under saddle with Elva
Dora - 2003 14'3hh Bay Mare
unraced - un named
Dora has grown and matured into a lovely mare and has headed off to have beautiful Quarter Horse babies as an ET mum. Impressed with her nature her new owners said they will probably also ride her as well. Ola!
Butch - 15hh 1992 Black Gelding
Royle Choice retired March 2001
86 races for $35050
Butch has gone from one cold country to another with his move to Mt Beauty in Victoria. After weeks of preparation Kim is ready to welcome Butch home and to start exploring their local trails. This boy was a delight to train and ride, honest and confident, he has a great future ahead of him.
from Kim 31/07/08 - "With his ridden work Billy has not put a foot wrong. At one stage i had not ridden him for 4 weeks due to being sick. When i did ride him next he was calm and done everything asked. He is a lovely horse who is smart and tries hard to please."
Charlie - 1994 Bay Gelding, 14'3hh
Royle Treasure - unraced
Despite a nervous start Charlie and Deb have formed a great partnership and it has been wonderful to see their confidence in each other grow. Deb is now looking forward to joining her husband Tom and his horse Shadow on the trails around their small farm. From Deb 05/05/08
Hi Pieta,
Tom and I went on our first trail ride to the pine forests on saturday. Charlie went really well and I must admit I wasnt too bad myself when I remembered to breathe. Thank you so much for everything and heres hoping we can all get together soon for a ride." Lookin' Good guys!
Candy - 1993 Bay Mare, 15hh
Fine Irish 1993 - retired Dec 2000
91 starts for $25,789, one filly just starting her racing career.
Such a lovely mare who, despite not having raced for over 6 years, took to riding under saddle with great enjoyment. Renae and Daniel own Slim and I was very flattered when they said they wanted to take Candy, sight unseen, based on what a lovely horse Slim is! From Renee "Candy has settled in really well to her new home. Her and Slim get along really well, but Slim is the boss believe it or not!
Although she was initially a bit cautious of us and her new surroundings, I spent alot of time with her doing groundwork when she first arrived and now she is really settled and loves to spend time with us. Daniel really enjoys riding her, we go out trial riding around Coolamon most weekends. Daniel is enjoying it so much he has even sold the motorbike!
Arthur - 15'1hh Bay 2002 Gelding
Winsome Art retired May 2006
4 races for $5350
Gordon and Karen where lucky enough to be given this lovely boy by his trainer and asked me to start him under saddle for them. He is certainly a smart horse and his competitive nature showed at the start with him being quite forward and super responsive. Once he figured out the routine of trailing he was a pleasure to ride - soft, resposive and with a lovely trot and canter. Gordon was very happy with his new buddy and I think they will make a good team.
Marty Man - 1998 16hh Gelding
Press the Tempo 1998 retired Jan 06
76 starts for $16686
Marty was orginally supposed to be Craig's horse but his sensitive temperment meant he needed a bit more experience and so he became mine. He progressed from nervous nellie to being a lovely trail horse, he always tried his best in lessons and showed a keeness for jumping.
Marty & Allie
Big Bad's return to Kalimbah ment I had to chose between them but the decsion was made easier by finding Marty a great perfect in Ally.
Rocket and Sid - 2002 Geldings
Sizzling Stature 2001 - retired May 06
24 races for $2845
&
Dying to Please 2001 - retired May 07
43 races for $12763
These boys became good paddock buddies when they arrived at Kalimbah and have ended up going to 2 of the best homes I could have hoped for. Karen and Narelle are sisters and are regular riders on the MS Charity Ride. They wanted 2 trail buddies to enjoy the experience with and these boys fitted the bill. Karen and Narelle joined us for our first ATHRA trailride of the year before taking the boys off to their new homes and they all had a great day!
Nov 2008 - Rocket and Sid completed the MS Charity ride with Narelle and Karen. You can see there phots on the Links page.
Kenny - 15'1hh 6yo Black Gelding
Casino Dan 2001 - retired May 07
26 starts for $1350
Kenny's unflappable attitude reminded me very much of Nick - a good union member, he was not really interested in doing any more than he absolutely had to! Purchased as a "Husband Horse" he also spent time on loan a Pony Club mount and even did a led show.
Slim - 16'1hh 2002 Seal Brown Gelding
The Freeza retired Dec 06
15 starts for $1800
People often ask if I find it hard to sell on some of the horses I train... well with this one it was very hard! Slim is an exceptional horse with one of the finest temperements I have come across. I really couldn't justify keeping him for myself so it is just as well he has gone to the best home I could wish for with Renee and Daniel in Coolamon. This is from Renee 25/09/07...
"Hope you are going well. Just thought I would send you some photos of Slim. He is going great. He has settled into his new home really well and has made friends with the mare & foal next door who is also in the pictures. He travelled well all the way to Coolamon although I think he was glad to get out of the float by the time we got here!
We have been for a few rides - unfortunately just around the paddock at the moment due to the restrictions in place for EI. Am looking forward to getting out on the trail when the restrictions are lifted.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for selling me such a wonderful horse, he has a great temperament and is a pleasure to own. I hope you like the photos."
Rose - 15hh 2003 Bay Mare
Unraced - Unnamed
Trish says she was so impressed by the first photos she saw of Rose she contaced me even though she was sure she must have been sold by then. It must have been ment to be as Rose was just getting ready for sale and Trish drove all the way from Bathust to see her. Rose has gone to a wonderful home with Trish who already has 2 other standies and a wonderful appreciation of the breed
Chopper - 1998 16hh Dk Brown Gelding
Colonial Recruit - retired Jan 07
61 starts for $15710
Well our one eared man has gone to a home in the high counrty with Rob and his family. Chopper was unflappable under saddle but has a very strong personality - just as well Rob is more than a match for him in that department.
11/04/08 One of the nicest phonecalls I have every had came last week from a lady in Victoria who was so excited to see Choppers picture here on my website. She had bought him as a yearling in pretty poor condition from Julie Tillbrook ( the lady at the center of the Lara horses saga) and he was one of the first horses she broke and trained in harness. Too slow for the Victorian circuit, she sold him to a trainer in NSW. She was able to trace him to the trainer that I bought him from but did not know where he ended up at the end of his career. Her joy at seeing him here was infectious and we were both almost in tears. Sigh ... and people wonder why I do this :)
Sally - 2004 15'2hh Dk Bay Mare
Sally broke in so easily and had such a sweet nature that we were happy for a local family to have her for their 11yo daughter to trail. She has matured into a smart, sensible mare.
Originally bought for her partner, Erin gave Rusty a crash course in saddle work with 2 weeks of solid riding, including trail, arena and pole work. Apparently he had a few problems with "the go button" but they sorted it out well enough to bring home 11 ribbons from his first Pony Club Gymkana (Erin is an associate). This included 2nd's in Pleasure Hack (he cantered for that one!), Erin's rider class and a place in pairs. They also scored 57% in their 1.1 Prelim Dressage test (with high praise from the judge), cleared their 45cm showjumping and cross country! Congratulations Erin and Rusty - I'm sure this is just the start of a great partnership!
Indie - 2002 15'1hh Mare
Apache Cam - unraced
Indie has gone into to Canberra to be spoilt rotten by Anna and I really could not have hoped for a better match of rider and horse. What a lovely sweet mare and an equally lovely young rider. Indie is in good company with our other placed standies - Aussie, Smokey and Big J also agisted at the same facility!
From Anna 02/08/07...
Hi Pieta
It's Anna, sorry it's been a while. We are both doing very well and Indie is coming on in leaps and bounds. We have started to canter in the arena with very little trouble and were heading off to our first show last weekend but I broke my toe. She settled in almost straight away and we had no trouble at all catching her. She now recognizes me when I come to get her from the paddock and nickers at me when I call her. She gets along great with the other horses and has made many friends (mostly male). All in all everything is well and we both wish you well and thank you for all that you have done for us. We will try to send photos soon (if I can get the camera to work).Anna
Brooke - 2001 15hh Mare
Kybean Brook - retired Dec 2007
14 races for $775
Well, I am really kicking myself that I didn't take my camera when I took Brook off to her new home with Jodie and Xavier. They have a stunning property on the Numeralla River SW of Cooma and I am looking forward on visiting Jodie and Brook to ride with them. Brook is such a delightful mare and is going to love the attention from Jodie and the fantastic trails they have to share.
12/11/07 - Brooke and Jodie are becoming well known in the Cooma area, attending riding clinics and a Pat Parelli clinic. I've had quite a few people comment on what a lovely mare she is and what a great ambassador for the breed. Keep up the good work girls!
Gem - 1995 14'3hh Mare
Shiner Stone retired June 2000
21 races for $2218
Gem retired from racing to be broodmare and although she had not been worked in any way for 7 years took her saddle training with no problems.
Banjo (Ferrari) - 1999 15'1hh gelding
Young Regret - retired Dec 06
76 starts for $34807
This boy has been a pleasure to train and will make a great mate for Jim on the trail. We went for a quick ride before they headed home and where already very comfortable with each other by the end. Jim has promised some pictures soon.
Aussie - 2001 15hh Gelding
Irkutsk retired Jan 2007
38 starts for $23,481
Aussie would have to be one of the quietest Standardbreds I have ever ridden and never seemed worried about anything . This is just the sort of laid back horse Kristy had been looking for to get her confidence on and be able to ride with her young son - I think they will make a perfect pair.
From Kristy after Aussie's arrival and their first ride at home.... "hi peita,
well i must say ive brought a lot of horses over the years and nothing will ever be or has ever been as good as aussie, he floated fantastic, when it was time to get him off the float as im used to horses just walking so fast off once the door is open, i said to nathan let me hop in first once i un tie aussie i will tell you then open the door and move, so he did it and well aussie stood there looking at me like what do ya want me off now. i said come on aussie back up and he walked off so slowly not a scary moment at all, so yesterday i rode him and he was fantastic didnt put a foot wrong, he is so lovely im so in love with him. he is so nice to my sons pony and just a great man. i shall send photos soon, i was so excited yesterday i forgot the camera. im going out to see him again soon even thought it is raining i wanna cuddle him. he is such a great confidence booster, i am and would recommend to others to buy a standie as i havent had such a quiet man for yrs. i just cant thank you enough. anyway we will keep in touch and hopefully he stays this quiet for ever. oh he also loves the potty lambs my mum has they were following me every where yesterday while i was riding him i was nervous at first when they came running up but aussie just looked at them and kept doing the job, what a man. im in love i tell you. ive decided to keep aussie as he comes to it better than geroge and dad really likes aussie as the name. oh and well has dad change his mind on standies wow he is in love too. ill keep you upto date. thanks pieta take care kristy "
Almost 3 years later I still get regular updates from Kristy and her wonderful Aussie.
Jack - 1998 14'3hh Gelding
Palatino Lad - unraced
From Kylie 04/04/07...
"On Sunday we went for our first long ride which was for 2 1/2 hours. He was great especially considering that he hasn't really been ridden since the day that I came and rode him at your place. The place I previously had him at the riding area was very limited, so he only got ridden twice for a very short time. So out we went with another three horses, up and down gullies, through scrub (we were making our own trails in some spots), through mud, long grass, under a railway bridge, through paddocks and around and over fallen trees without a problem. He was forward moving the whole time. Only once did I have to get off him to walk him through an area that was very narrow to place his feet however he followed me with no problems. So thank you soooo much for introducing me to the world of being a standy owner. He brings me a lot of joy. He is such a personality and is a great horse and I look forward to having many happy trails with him. There is a 3 hour charity ride coming up soon so we are thinking about going. Thanks again Kylie : )"
Molly - 2001 15'1hh Mare
unraced - unnamed
Miss Molly headed off today to her new home with Ray in Gundagai. We went for a short trail before they left and she and Ray already looked very comfortable together. Good Luck to both of them - we look forward to lots of pics and news.
From Ray 22/02..."Well just short message Molly is going great, we had our first big ride today and she was just perfect 2 hours over some tough country. I was told horses showed no true affection well this girl has proven them wrong. We are very pleased with Molly her and our sons horse Plod have become good mates. I will send some pictures soon."
Smokey - 2004 gelding and Aussie - 2002 gelding
These boys are great paddock mates and have been placed together with Julie and Danni to be spoilt rotten! Julie is looking forward to trailing Aussie and Danni wants to try Dressage with Smokey as they learn and grow together.
From Julie 20/02.... "the boys are doing well, nothing seems to faze Smokey at all, he has a great personality and can be a bit cheeky. Aussie is the boss in the paddock, they share with a clydesdale and a 6 year old TB, he is a very sweet and calm boy, we are really happy with them and would not part with them for anything, its great they both come when called now and they certainly know the routine of being stabled, they are waiting at the gate for you in the evening for dinner."
Diezel - 1997 15'2hh Gelding
Williamette retired Dec 06
123 races for $64470
Deizel came with high praise from his trainer in Bargo after a very sucessful racing career and is certainly a true gentleman on the ground. Virgina and her daughter had been waiting for a Standie and should enjoy contiuning this boys training.
Big J - 2000 16'3hh Gelding
Jake was lightly raced as a 2yo and then owned by a hobby driver who took him to local driving gymkanas. He is one of the most easygoing horses we have had and he will have a great home with Daniel and Rachel with many miles of happy trails ahead of them.
Barney - 1996 gelding
After a sucessful racing career Barney retired out west but lack of feed and water forced him to look for a new home. He is now babysitting some pretty girls at a local arab stud and although ready to be ridden is still living a life of ease!
Paddy - 2002 16hh Gelding
unraced
Paddy is Billy's half brother and they both share the most wonderful soft nature. Carol and John wanted a horse for John to potter around on at their farm and Paddy and John hit it off straight away
